Bio2Foam Partnership Strengthened Through Australian Field Visit

In October 2025, representatives from Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) and the German industrial partner VAUDE, visited their Australian counterparts to deepen collaboration on the Bio2Foam project. The delegation met with teams from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), bio-refining company Licella, and technology partner Lextra to advance the development of bio-based polyurethane foams from sugarcane bagasse.

From Sugarcane Field to Laboratory: Comprehensive Value Chain Overview

The visit provided a unique opportunity for the German partners to experience the entire production value chain directly. The delegation toured sugarcane plantations to understand the raw material sourcing, followed by visits to sugar refineries where bagasse—the fibrous residue of sugarcane processing—is generated. This field experience was complemented by technical site visits to Licella's pilot-scale facility and laboratory-scale installations for bio-polyol production at QUT, enabling the team to see how sugarcane residues are transformed into high-value bio-derived polyols. "Experiencing the complete value chain firsthand accelerated our understanding of the technical requirements and opportunities," noted one team member.

Productive Project Meetings

Beyond the technical site visits, the delegation participated in intensive project meetings with their Australian partners. Discussions focused on current project progress, including optimisation of the bio-polyol production process, mechanical characterisation of bio-based foam samples, and the development of sustainability assessment methodologies. The meetings also addressed key challenges and aligned the team on upcoming milestones, ensuring coordinated efforts across all partner institutions.

Cultural Exchange: German Week Brisbane

The visit was enriched by participation in the German Week celebration in Brisbane, fostering broader scientific and cultural exchange between the Australian and German research communities. This event provided an additional platform for the Bio2Foam project to present its work to a wider audience and connect with other German-Australian research initiatives.

Strengthening the Australian-German Partnership

The successful visit reinforced the strong collaborative spirit of the Bio2Foam project. The combined expertise of academic researchers and industry partners from both countries positions the project well to achieve its sustainability goals. "This visit demonstrated the value of face-to-face collaboration in addressing the complex technical and sustainability challenges we're tackling," said another participant. "With clearer insights into our partners' capabilities and constraints, we're confident in our path forward."

The insights gained during the visit inform the next phase of the project, which will focus on producing diverse foam formulations, conducting rigorous mechanical testing, and completing comprehensive sustainability assessments. The Australian visit exemplified the commitment of all partners to achieving innovative, sustainable materials that meet real-world market demands.
